This illustration shows clearly the differences between flying ants and termite swarmers. (1.) The wings on flying ants are of two different lengths and tapered at the ends. (2.) The wings of termite swarmers are of equal length and very rounded at the tips. (3.) As shown the the photographs above, the waist of an ant is conspicuous and thin. The termite waist is as thick as the rest of its body. (4.)  Ant antennae are bent while termite antennae are straight.

Telling the difference between a swarming termite and a flying ant is easy if you know what to look for.

Termite bodies are very similar to that of lightning bugs. They have a thick waist with very little to differentiate between the thorax (midsection) and the abdomen (rear). Their antenna are straight.

Ant bodies are very clearly segmented into three sections. The waist between the thorax (midsection) and abdomen (rear) is quite thin and may vary in length. Their antenna are elbowed.

Termites swarm in early spring, between late February and the end of May, often after a night of rain. During a termite swarm the colony members capable of reproducing find their mates and forage for new places to build new colonies. A swarm is a symptom of a termite problem than has been growing for some time. Therefore you should contact a qualified exterminator as soon as possible to diagnose the situation.
